Re: For the bored. A challenge

Looks like a Miners Tag.

Used sort of like a TIME CLOCK.

Re: For the bored. A challenge

I know! I know! (raising hand wildly) It's one of those tags used in old west brothels. "#28, you're next. Paging #28-your room is ready!" ;D

I think you guys nailed it....well not you Stoney , but the rest of them....it does look like it was used for safety to tell who was in the mine....

Re: For the bored. A challenge

I find quite alot of the brass tags...not sure about mining in Kansas but around here the "old timers" would hand load their coal car and place their tag on it. When the car was pulled outside and dumped the outside man would use the tag for accounting for their wages (paid based on production). The smarter of the underground miners would keep a journal detailing their own counts of cars loaded along with expenses (caps, wicks, etc) to make sure the outside man wasn't cheating them. The way I hear it the outside man took quite a few earful's for suspected cheating, at least around here. Hey, but I am just guessing...-Underwood

IF you ever want to see what Mining really was like, Watch the movie "Molly Maguires"

The Miners not only needed to Keep Track of everything they used, It came out of their own Pockets.

Re: For the bored. A challenge

It is a miners load tag, used to identify the loads a specific miners sent to the surface. Used in the salt mines in SE Kansas.

Thanks for the challenge.

For the bored. A challenge and answer

You guys and gals were great. I hope you had some fun and learned a few new things from others. Thank you all for participating. I added a little information for you MD?ers in the area. You can take it from there.

AND?? the answer: This miner tag is made of iron. Many were made of brass. Many uses were created as you can tell from the posts. This particular one was used to keep track of each coal car loaded by them. I found it near West Mineral Kansas. An 80 year old gentleman explained how it was used. He then brought his out and gave it to me. I could tell in his eyes not to refuse.
YOU HAD IT RIGHT !!! wv_underwood and GABBYGEP close no salt mines.

Research for the area: http://www.isgs.uiuc.edu/servs/pubs/county-coal-maps/crawford.pdf
