For a friend civil war button

My friend found this yesterday,and on the back it says Waterbury COS Conn dose any one have a clue we think it is a civil war button

BigCy is correct.  The button is still being made today.  #3281.  (#5328 is a Staff Officer's "muffin-style" button.)

Different backmark for the CW ones.

The style of the lyre was different on many of those buttons as well. For example, see the top, center button in the photo below is CW:



The same lyre style was CW era on the Waterbury button in the following link (#GP74):

However, the backmark reads "WATERBURY BUTTON CO./CONN" rather than "WATERBURY CO.S/CONN"

The backmark on your button is one used by Waterbury since 1965.

yes the co, plain pre 65 it theres a "s" --- co.s --post 65 -- s means "modern" button
