Last year we got permission for this new land & unusually for farmers in my area, he sets-a-side half of his land. Therefore we left this land until last as we have an option all winter to hunt it. The owner who is interested in history had spotted some Roman Samian pottery in this field & we had high hopes because we had tried the field next door & found some scattering of pot shards & the odd Roman Coin, so we knew we were not far off a site. This had the classic high ground look, 500 metres from a Roman Road!
We did 4 hours of full length runs every 30 metres looking for any good signs. Although we saw some Roman Pot Shards & got 1 scrappy, there was no soil changes, little lead & no nails. So another option crossed off the list.
Very poor Hammered Sixpence
1 Scrappy
1 broken up Tudor Clothes Fastener
1 broken Lead Cloth Seal
1 mystery long bronze piece
A few buttons to the count...
If you don't try, you don't know, & it takes us 1 step closer to an area on this new land.
