Well, more like thousands of insects. The gnats were so bad today that I had to cut my detecting short. I was out there for a couple hours, with a beach-ball-sized nimbus of gnats around my head the whole time.

Why are they so interested in us? They don't bite. What do they want? After a lot of thinking, I've concluded that human eye juice must be some kind of gnat aphrodisiac. They all seem to go for the eyes.

I did manage to dig up a few things, though. An old spoon, a bit of clad, a 1976 1 Gulden coin from the Netherlands, and a couple of other things. I really like the brass Y and E tag, which, I learned, probably came off of an old wooden file cabinet made by the Yawman and Erbe company.

Also dug up from about 5 inches down a thin scrap of copper, which I realized has a mark on it. Anybody recognize it? Looks like a monogram of IC or CI with the word TRADE above and MARK below.

Thanks for looking and happy hunting!

seems like I've seen the trade mark symbol before. sewing related?

Get one of those hats that have mesh attached. Yes, you will look silly, but they really work.

Hippolates flies are attracted to secretions from mucus membranes. They are opportunistic little buggers. Definitely attracted to eyes and nose secretions.

What gnats!

It's Spring! Happy days are here again!
Aaaah, gnats! Nice finds, under the circumstances!

I think that is part of a lid to a canning jar....that looks very similar to the Consolidated Fruit Jar company logo

I think you're right. And after cleaning it some, I'm pretty sure it's not copper, so canning jar lid makes sense.
