A couple of weeks ago, I hunted a Colonial farm field in Kingston, New York, as a guest of my buddy Frank – “Fmerg.” http://www.treasurenet.com/forums/todays-finds/321589-fun-farm-field-day-forum-members.html One of the deep iron objects I found (16” deep) intrigued me, because I got the impression it was a very old bowl of some kind.
After two-weeks soaking in Apple Cider Vinegar, which Erik recommended, and working off chunks-o-crud with a pick, here is the results. I don’t have a before shot sorry, but it was coated in a solid inch of rusty, muddy concretion which has now been removed. After photographing it, I’m going to put it in olive oil.
It is an iron bowl with a 1-inch diameter “foot” on the bottom that you can now see clearly. I’m guessing it was about a half-inch thick when cast. Any ideas what a heavy cast iron bowl like this would be used for? – Thanks!
