I was going through a box of chips from when I first started collecting and came across this. It is really beat up and I think it is made from a dirty colored quartz. The opposite side is even worse. It has a small flute down the center and fits perfectly between your thumb and forefinger. Anyone have any ideas as to what type this could have been when it was originally made? Could this be a Clovis that has been resharpened about a 1000 times? Found in Northwest Iowa.

Thanks!

Wow... That looks like a fluted point to me? Very nice.

To defined of a flute to be a fluke! It has been around the block a few times. It's good you re-found it. I could not begin to type it but it is a great piece.

I think "been around the block a few times" is an understatement! Anyway, pretty cool to discover something like this from my early days of collecting. It makes me wonder what else I found back in the day that I didn't hang onto...

Super find I have one that has been sharpened down to almost nothing as well thanks for sharing !!!!

I still dont know and may never know but if this is a Clovis that has been resharpened a ton of times it is extremely rare! It was found in northwest Iowa and if I am correct only 4 examples have been found in the region. This would be the 4th. It would be rare because the Des Moines Lobe, which was a glacier covered the area during most of the Paleoindian period. Most examples from Iowa are from the southern portion of the sate.

A rare find indeed shure does got the look there is more around than the archys know of ,not going back in the old chip box ?

Nope not going back in the chip box....in fact im going to dig through it again! I remember finding it some 30 years ago and showing it to my grandpa while we were hunting. We didnt know much then as we just started hunting. He said put that in your pocket, its really really old. I forgot about it after that and got to rediscover it.
