We went to Florida and I was looking forward to cleaning up on the beach. When we got there my wife’s brother informed me that they were replenishing the beach sand. I went out to the beach and there was a big pipe running down the beach for miles and all the old beach was now covered in new sand. Down the beach to the south you could see the bulldozers moving the new sand as it was pumped onto the beach. When you get closer to the operation you can see that they were digging up the existing beach and pushing it out into the water to make a valley for the new sand to be pumped into. The area was fenced off and a watchman was there running people off if they wandered into the work area.
DAY 1
I went down south of the operation to do some detecting ahead of the dozers. The beach was very quiet with very few targets and after it warmed up not many people showed up to leave targets for me to dig later.
I spent 3.5 hour swingin the CZ21 and found 26 coins with a face value of $2.02, 2 tabs, a 1947 wheatie, 3 tent pegs, some construction trash, a little foil and 7 whole aluminum beer cans that someone buried after their little party.
DAY 2
I went further south and found a park to detect. I did 2 hours on the beach and didn’t find much (1 quarter, 3 dimes, 2 nickels and 4 pennies, a couple tent pegs, a tab and one piece of foil). I got off the beach and worked the grass around the parking areas and did better.
All together in 4.5 hours of swingin the CZ21 I found 111 coins with a face value of $3.90, a large stainless bolt, an aluminum HOME DEPOT tag, an earring, a bead, a bracelet, a hat pin, a sinker, 3 more tent pegs, some aluminum bottle caps, 14 tabs and no foil. A decent variety but nothing great.
DAY 3
I went a little further south where they are not working on the beach and did another 2 hours on the beach and didn’t find a single coin. I found 2 tabs, 2 tent pegs and a piece of foil and that was all. I went over a pretty large area and it was dead, dead, dead.
I got off the beach and worked around the parking area and around a restroom and some picnic tables and did ok. I spent 4 hours swingin the CZ21 and found 108 coins with a face value of $3.65 (lots of pennies), a dental crown, a key, a twisted up glasses frame, 2 aluminum bottle caps, 14 tabs and a toy shark.
The dental crown looks like gold, but of course is not marked so I had to wait until I got home to test it. It is 14k and very thin with some adhesive still on the inside. Not big and heavy, but any gold is good gold and I have finally broken my precious metal slump (the last silver find was December 14th). Sharky likes the crown. I hope he doesn’t swallow it LOL.
DAY 4
I went north this time and tried a park where I have had some luck in the past. The beach there has been replenished and the pipe is still running along the beach with sand pushed up to form walkovers so you can cross the pipe and get to the ocean. I spent 2 hours searching for some good spots and only managed to find 2 pennies, a tab, a chunk of junky aluminum and some bottle caps. There was another guy out there detecting and he wasn’t finding anything either. So I went off the beach and did areas around the parking, pavilions and tables. I had good luck there, nothing great, but lots of coins (114 pennies).
In 4.5 hours of swingin the CZ21 I managed to find 158 coins with a face value of $7.89, a Coca-Cola polar bear pin, a ring, a small sinker, a decorative key, aluminum bottle caps and 13 tabs.
DAY 5
I went to the cocoa beach pier to try my luck and found the beach replenishment was just past the pier and most of the area was fenced off and bulldozed. So that plan went south in a hurry. I spent 2.5 hours covering the beach inland of the fenced area near the concessions and parking hoping for a little luck and then going north on the beach that they had finished hoping they might have brought in a goodie or 2 from the ocean. I old found 1 nickel, 7 pennies, 2 tabs, a tent peg and a screw.
So I got in the truck and went further south to a park and worked around the parking area and found lots of pennies and a couple of interesting items. All together I spent 4 hours swingin the CZ21 and found 98 coins with a face value of $3.36, a sinker, part of an earring with a nice big cz, a foreign coin, a wierd piece of jewelry, a key, 15 tabs, some more whole aluminum cans, bottle caps and 1 more tent peg.
The foreign coin is nice on the front and really cruddy on the back so it was in the sand face down for a good while. It is a Canadian dollar. There is a picture of a loon on the back and I have been told it is referred to as a loony.
The earring is heavy and missing the post. It looked like gold coming out of the hole. No markings that I can see unfortunately it did not test as gold.
Replenished or not replenished the beaches were very unproductive. I believe several things are at play here. One, people are doing fewer and fewer cash transactions so they don’t carry change. Two, the economy is still not good so they aren’t wearing jewelry and are more careful with their money. Three, fewer people can afford the time or money to go to the beach. And lastly the weather controls the beach conditions and sometimes everything is just too deep to detect. Whatever the reasons at least I found some spots off the beach where I could get some swing time and some finds. Altogether I found 501 coins with a face value of $20.82 and 58 tabs.
NON DETECTOR FINDS
I managed one penny on the pavement at a gas station and a cheapie earring in the hall at a motel.
I got an odd quarter in change. The D mint mark is filled in. I checked on sold items on eBay and they sell for between $0.55 and $3.00 so nothing great but it is different.
I saw some nice sunrises, a sunset and a nice little curly tailed lizard.
I also saw a couple of gators on the bank by a friend’s house.
At last I am back swingin at home just in time for more snow and the slump is over (for now). Thanks for looking, stay safe, good luck and may your coil lead you to good things.
