Florida Spike point & ?? beach hunt sat 8/8/09
Drove an hour to my favorite spot on the Appalachicola Bay yesterday. The pickins were slim as the tide was not as low as I was hoping & the storms had covered up my good rubble areas with sand.
It is really hard to find stuff here because the chert, sand & oyster shells are all white. There are no rocks in this area of northwest Florida, so if you find one it was most definitely carried by someone or something. I did manage to pick up 3 pieces of chert, one was just a flake, but the other 2 are really neat. The one on the left is called a Florida Spike missing the tip & the other one looks like either a broken & reworked point or possibly an unfinished Pinnelas point or drill.
The Spike is really interesting because it is 4 sided & pretty darn symmetrical on all 4 sides. It looks as if it was inserted into a socketed shaft rather than hafted in the traditional way...what o you guys think.
