Florida Spike point & ?? beach hunt sat 8/8/09

Drove an hour to my favorite spot on the Appalachicola Bay yesterday. The pickins were slim as the tide was not as low as I was hoping & the storms had covered up my good rubble areas with sand.

It is really hard to find stuff here because the chert, sand & oyster shells are all white. There are no rocks in this area of northwest Florida, so if you find one it was most definitely carried by someone or something. I did manage to pick up 3 pieces of chert, one was just a flake, but the other 2 are really neat. The one on the left is called a Florida Spike missing the tip & the other one looks like either a broken & reworked point or possibly an unfinished Pinnelas point or drill.

The Spike is really interesting because it is 4 sided & pretty darn symmetrical on all 4 sides. It looks as if it was inserted into a socketed shaft rather than hafted in the traditional way...what o you guys think.

Hey Jpitt

Good spots in that sand. I am not sure why it would be socketed? Great finds on what sounded like a tough day

Tn.. I wish I had my camera working, this point is 4 sided & the base is kind of rounded like it fit into a hollow shaft almost like a modern arrow. I'll see how my scanner works ina few.

it might be a duval , a woodland point, rhomboid , diamond shape, hard to tell from your scan.the other is a flake. nice find

My scanner does no justice!!! left is a Florida Spike and the one on the right is no "flake" it was obviously halfted...looks like an impact fracture broke it then it was reworked into a drill, awl or some kind of tool

I am with Littlejohn, neither look like worked artifacts to me.

I spent over 20 years walking creeks, streams and fields in Missouri every weekend and many times after work. I found thousands of pieces of chert that look like these on the ground. Chert will easily fracture into pieces like the one on the right.

If you feel they are real you can take them to artifact shows where experts can look at them for you in person.

You ask what do we think, but when we give an opinion you obviously only want opinions that agree with you. Why not send your "Florida spike" in and get it authenticated and papered? This would add value to you point if real, and remove any doubt .

Last time I had one of my points authenticated the cost was $20, but now it is $25, still not that much money to spend for authentication and paper.

Here is link to Jackson Galleries, one of the top authenticators in the country, and world renowned for it's artifact authentication service.

(Nice artifacts Littlejohn.)

the go to guy in Fl. is Carlos Tatum and field grade points arent worth authenticating, not a knock on your finds just saying....

Re: Florida Spike point & ?? beach hunt sat 8/8/09

I posted these pieces because they are way out of the ordinary and thought you guys might find them interesting instead of discounting them. I have been collecting since I could walk the fields w/ my dad... I am no newbie & have been doing this for over 30 years and know what I'm looking at. These pieces are just real head scratchers. I guess I am going to have to repost these when I buy a new camera. I just put these on the scanner which really doesn't show much detail at all.

I know this post sounds as though I am mad at you guys. that is not the case. I am just super friggin frustrated that after I have finally figured out how to post my pictures without much hassle my camera decided to sh*t the bed.

Sorry

I've seen several ppl's frames of FLA points. I see work on the smaller point. It is typical of the area (state). Chert is hard to come by here, so if you find any, its usually been handled by Indians.
I have so many thoughts on this thread but, haven't got the time or energy to waste.
Nice finds JP.
JP, I'll PM you a great site for FLA points. Friendly ppl there too, also experienced collectors, from FLA.

Molly.
