Florida Hunters

I for the most part have been a Civil War relic hunter in Missouri and Tennessee. I have just moved to Florida and I am wanting to start up a collection of more relics seeming my choices for spots down here are a lot more slim for the Civil War. I have just used cwbullet.com for any postings in the past since they were all CW related. I thought I'd try this one out to find more hunters in my area. Is anyone here from central Florida and wanting to do some digging? Also, what are the best types of places down here? I can only guess beaches, but much else?

Thanks,

Nathan

BureFreak,
I'm from Saint Petersburg, FL (Central West Coast, right across the Bay from Tampa) and I go to school in Springfield, Missouri. I'll be back home for the Summer in about 5 to 6 weeks. I'm going to be busy working all Summer, but I may have free time here and there. I'm just about to get into metal detecting, though I've been doing research on both Missouri/Ozarks and Florida for some time. I used to be a member of an archaeological group for about 4 plus years throughout high school... but outside of that, I haven't had much of a chance to dig down there. If you want to talk about possibly getting together this Summer, let me know...

Bran,

Tell me you go to Missouri State?! I graduated from there in 05! Springfield has a lot to offer also, seeming there were two battles in Springfield, and of course Wilson's Creek. I know of a couple of great places in town and around town there that are excellent and legal to dig on...with permission of course. That would be great to get someone to dig with down here. I just bought a new pair of Gray Ghosts I've been wanting to try out. That sounds like a very promising spot in Tampa. I've been trying to do a little research to see what else Florida has to offer. I've found out quite a bit about Spanish and French forts as well. Any ideas?

To all. Thanks for the information. It is helping me with more investigation.

Fort Brooke and Tampa are one in the same place. The actual location of Fort Brooke is downtown Tampa.

Although not really a battlefield, the Fort did come under Union attack a few times and was once occupied by Union troops for a short period of time.
There were a couple skirmishes at or near this site.More of an outpost than a fort,in my opinion. For a mere two days it was occupied by the north before it was abandoned. The remains of the fort (if any) would be located under the pavement at the Tampa Convention Center. There were many more "Indian Wars" fought in Florida than Civil War battles. Here's a site for battles in Florida during the civil war.http://www.cr.nps.gov/hps/abpp/battles/FLmap.htmcouple of pics, then and now-

diggummup,
Your link is broken, though your information is definitely interesting...

Nathan,
I'm sorry to disappoint you, but I don't attend MSU/SMS. I'm actually a 4th year here at BBC (on Kearney). It looks as if you're possibly my age and graduated from high school when I did ('01). I've taken two years worth of breaks since I've been here, so I'm on the 15 year plan. j/k
I did know that Springfield had battles here at one point, though I've never did a whole lot of research on any of them. There has been quite alot of historical events take place in the Ozark area though, which fascinates me for sure. Yeah, Tampa has always been a prime spot for history buffs. Well hopefully you haven't had to do much research to figure out that Florida is overflowing with places to detect and research up on!! I haven't researched a whole lot of the forts in the area, outside of the fort at Fort deSoto park, which seems to be completely off limits unless you're best friends with the rangers there. Florida's definitely a very competitive state to TH'ing though... more so than the Ozarks. But I'll be looking forward to heading back home for the Summer for sure. By the way, where in Florida are you at?

Sorry about that.I fixed it.Here's a little info on forts in Florida during the three Seminole wars, just to give you an idea as to how widespread and plentiful they were. That being said there are some forts not listed and some not even "discovered" or excavated yet,as well as many that have been "paved over".http://tfn.net/~cdk901/fortlist.htm.FYI-the link I provided just now will not be available after May 1,2007.There is much more information within this site pertaining to the Seminole Wars in Fl.,if you want to save any of it for future reference you'd better not wait too long.Hit the "return home" button at the bottom left of the page for more info.

Bran,

I live in Lake Mary, over just east of Orlando, but I have family in Lakeland, Auburndale, and Orlando so I'm all around all of the time. Plus, I go over to Anna Maria Island all of the time. I love that area..and I'll be getting married there come September.

I didn't know they kept For Desoto Beach so tightly held. I've never tried taking out a MD there before though to the beach.

diggummup,

Thanks for the additional information. I'm shocked at how many forts there were in such a small area.

diggummup,
Thanks for that link. I'm currently saving the whole website... I think it's over 50MB of info right now. Who knows how large it will all be. It'll probably take me some time to read it all over though... but I appreciate it! :)

BureFreak,
I have a friend up here at college whose dad is the pastor of Palmetto Avenue Baptist Church over there in Lake Mary!! lol Small world...
Also, congrats on getting married!!! I asked my girlfriend's father if I could marry her over Christmas Break... he said he'd have to talk to her mom and get back to me. So far I've still not heard anything, but my girlfriend is hoping that he'll say yes over Summer Break. We "were" wanting to get married on 7/7/07, but I guess it won't be happening until I get a "yes".
Well they may not be as harsh during the day, though I've never detected there at all, so I may be wrong... but they are anal at night there for sure!! I guess we'll find out how difficult it'll be this Summer...

Bran,

Sorry to hear you haven't heard back yet on the wedding. I found out that I broke tradition with my fiancee's family. She is Laotion, and apparently it is tradition in Laos to offer a dowry (SP) of many thousands of dollars. Her father said that since it is not in my tradition that he would not expect it. That is very generous of him and the rest of her family not to expect that money. I think I will sometime after the wedding give them some gold bullion, but I will keep it a surprise from them until then.

I used to go to school with some Laos girls back in middle school, heh. Dude, that's pretty sweet man!!! It's kinda like in Biblical times where a dowry was given (i.e. precious metals, livestock, etc.) to replace the loss of the daughter in the family. You know, if you were to have a traditional American wedding... it'd be awesome if you somehow incorporated giving that bullion to her father as he is giving you his daughter. Especially if it were unexpected. I think it'd show a great amount of respect to him and his family.
I'd have to say not getting an immediate "yes" hasn't been all bad. It's definitely taught me some patience and that she's definitely worth waiting for...
