The pieces in the last photo have been identified. After talking with Timekiller, we have decided that the items in the last photograph are parts of a trigger guard. Thanks for your help!

Original Post

Hi Everyone,

I've been digging on a site that was occupied from 1800-1850 (but had pre & post influences). From this site I've found coins ranging from a 1778 Spanish Half Reale to 1817-1853 Large Cents to 1869 IHs, along with gun parts, knife parts, musket balls, china pieces, and a significant number of Indian Artifacts. Here are some of my latest postings. Look closely at the last picture - it has me stumped. Both pieces about two inches long.

Re: Flintlock Rifle Parts

Thanks, Timekiller! You're quick on the draw!
The other piece is identical in it's composition and patina.
I believe the "tab" is bent over - it probably stood straight out of the back.

Thanks again!

Yea before someone comes along and growls at me your part is to the back of the barrel that mounts it to the stock so not really a thumb plate more of a mount. :D Here what I mean & one I found(thumbplate)

Re: Flintlock Rifle Parts

I see what you mean! Thanks for the photos. You're right - probably only a matter of time before someone stepped up to "correct" you.

Thanks Timekiller - Happy Hunting to ya!

Re: Flintlock Rifle Parts

Your other part looks like part of a trigger guard. Kinda like this.

Will do, True_Metal. Yes, it is an extraodinary site for Indiana. Shoot, it's just a great site, period. Very diverse finds.
I will be posting a video soon on my 4 week dig at this site. The AMOUNT of finds is impressive.
I was and am well AWARE that this may be a once-in-a-lifetime dig!

Happy Hunting,

~Indiana Digger~

Yep, I don't see stuff like that up on lake mich.

Few old coins, but not as old as that stuff.

It is a historical trade area, so maybe get some silver trinkets sometime though?

Definately keep up the digs, bro. 8)

Very interesting post !

Did anyone notice three teeth??? What's up with that? Burial ground? Any other body parts found?

I'm surprised that no one else had mentioned it before now.
One tooth - three views. No burial grounds in that immediate area.

I believe they are both pieces of a triggerguard, definitely not part of a barrel tang as indicated in the one picture. The barrel tang would be made of steel.
