I picked this grinding bowl up from a Flea Market a little while back. I am interested in knowing if anyone would know the possible origin of it? Are stone grinding bowls like this still produced? What part of the world? Any idea on age?

It is a little over 8" across. I thought it would make a good stone to crush tea leaves, etc. but was curious to know where this originally would be from and what age...

Any comments appreciated.

Looks like the ones sold in Mexico to tourists.

there are some like this produced in Mexico and other countries around Mexico.
my wife had one she obtained years ago, just before I met her.
hers was made from a pumice like stone, very porus.

The Spanish word for it is molcajete
(Mole-ka-het-a). They still make them today. Mostly from lava rock. I don’t know how to tell old from new, as they are made in the same way. Very useful item. I have one that: crushes herbs, nuts, peppers, etc.
