Hey all! I wanted to post this here before putting it on "today's finds" Dfallis and I hit up one of his permissions at an old colonial site and supposedly a site where civil war troops passed through. We found some cool things.
This button, is an awesome button (my first button found) and is a flat button. I'm having trouble making out what it is. Thanks for looking.

I took multiple pics at different angles. I used an IHP for size comparison.

I had also found this ornate copper "plate" .. well it seems more of half of one... Again I used the IHP for size comparison. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated also!

Looks like a medium size coat/cloak button. Not the bigger ones called Dandy button. It once had backmarks to say who made it and the "colour" etc. Some say RICH, Orange, or GILT, etc. Most people say backmarked flat buttons will range from around 1820-1840s, but a few say they could also be had in 1800.

"Most" flats of that size/type, rarely have a design on the face.

Lots of different buttons are out there to make a collection :)

Awesome info CTwoods! Thank you! The front has some impressions on it, I'll take it to my local club to see if they can confirm.

Hi HunterMF; I believe it is a Civilian Button due to the fact that the Military Style Buttons were much more heavily embossed with the design. If you want to get a better idea of what it is then you need to clean it. Here is how ok: Soak it in Lemon Juice for up to 3 hours, remove it and GENTLY rinse it off with warm water. Do NOT scrub it with ANYTHING. Repeat these steps until the Designn & the Makers Mark on the back become visible. If We here can read the writing of the Makers Mark then We here can nail it for you ok. I believe yours is 1820's or so ok. Good Luck. PEACE:RONB
