Found this pewter(?) button this weekend in 2 feet of water; lower left with the "J" and "12". I also found the 1817 Large Cent and Federal button (pictured) and several George III coppers nearby. The location is northern Lake Champlain about 7 miles south of the Canadian border. There were British and American troops located in the area during both the Revolutionary War and War of 1812. Any thoughts, please?

That "J" button is actually a script I infantry button from the war of 1812. By the number it is a 12th regiment of infantry button. Great shape too. Awesome find!

Congratultions on your finds. 12th Regiment (Infantry) assuming it's either 20 or 15 mm.

Just a quick update on the 12th Regiment Infantry button; I'm donating it to www.12thinfantry.org so they can have a genuine artifact of their group from 1812.
