I was roaming my dads property with no place in mind and found an area loaded with iron. This was the first nonferrous tone and I had to leave right after.

It was 5 inches down on the back side of a 20 acre lot.

It is absolutely a 2nd to 3rd quarter 18th century button called a "tombac" button. We find a lot of them on 1760 to 1790 sites. You may have a great place to dig.

Agree with tombac button. You might have an early homestead site. Work it hard.

I have a silver plated button identical to that only broken in half on the face. The shank is identical. I can confirm my site to the 1850s or earlier. Great spot you stumbled on most likely. Start checking old atlas maps for your township see what may have been there.
