A friend found this a few months ago. It was at the site of an old home place. Stone fireplace remains there and lots of yard trash. The house site is fairly close to a route that Civil War troops were known to frequent.

There is a truncated cone shape piece of wood remaining inside of it, partially rotted away.

Made of brass, about 4" long.

It looks to be one of those brass caps that you see on the top of a flag staff. The question is, can it be dated or identified any further. Is it CW era?

Any further information would be welcome.
