this was 1 of those items that got pushed to the side and cleaned of days later. I have found a lot of these stones but none with this clear of markings.

thanks for posting this
however a fishing sinker has a groove cut or has notches chipped into each side
i might be wrong but i think the marks are natural
i do not mean any disrespect

no disrespect taken. to say all artifacts in all parts of the country are going to look just like the 1 that your use to is not quite reality. I mean no disrespect with that. these guys made do with what they had. if they could walk the beach and pick up stones that would serve the purpose that's what they did. they also used a lot of oyster shells with holes pierced in them. no grooves there either. if you have the time and it interests you study coastal florida a little. again no disrespect

i mean tons of disrespect here, what you are saying about the peoples of your area using anything they could, reminds me of a couple places i go thats why i say to some folks on here that they can't make assumptions on pcs because pictures don't capture everything and some folks like you just know their sites , and i mean this with all the disrespect i can gather....Disclaimer....I am joking about not having any respect.

ha ha ha ha..... hahaha

I have to agree with Larson on this. I don't see any "markings" as you call them or any evidence whatsoever that was used for a Fishing Weight. Could it have been? Sure, because any rock COULD have been used for that purpose. But every Net Weight I have ever seen both personally and in any book has had a groove around it or been notched so it could attached with cordage to the Net. Can you show some nice close ups up the marking you are referring to?

These are examples of typical Net Weights.

yeah i dont see any markings either not to say it wasn't like steve said it COULDA been but yeah most weights seem to me to have distinct markings, I don't have any in my collection..something ive never found

Not to be adding fuel but You have to be honest with yourself-every primitive person had to "do with what they had". Not just the people in your area. Living off the land ,though may seem like a fantasy for a lot of people, is not fun and requires alot of skill and work which would kill most of us.. For someone to say this is what a sinker should look like and only this, has never walked an inch in the foot prints of any of our anchestors. If you are building a fishing net and need weights why would you spend days making a groove in a rock, when perfectl natural rocks with holes are laying around. But on the other hand if all of the rocks in you area are round, you would get tired of loosing you weights, and eventually put a groove in a rock. Anything natural that we find may have been a tool, but we can be certain of the ones that show wear or modifications to their natural forms. JMO
