I just found this cleaning my cellar. House is from the 1880s. I forgot to put a reference object in the pics but the size is about 1" square. The original is written in a mirror image - per the 1st pic. I reversed the pic for the 2nd image. I tried to find something on Blackstone Japan Silk Line and so far I just found a brief advertising reference from the 1930s.

Anyone know why this would be written in a mirror image?

As always... Thank you! ;D

What is the figure in the center? A fish?
Possibly a stamp of some sort.

Yes there is a picture of a fish. The lettering/picture is very smooth. When you said stamp though I started thinking perhaps it was attached on the top of the stamp ???

I just spent some time cleaning it - another pic

it being a mirror image I would say it was a stamp and Charles Blackstone from Londen was a silk merchant and his son was Sir William Blackstone a judge and legal writer who was born on
the 10 of July 1723 I can not find the info on Charles but I would think you have a stamp for marking the bolts of silk.
