FISHER 1280X Aquanaut

I detected with Bob Tulay for some 15 years and that is all he used in both fresh and salt water. He "knew his detector" and held his own detecting against the Excalibur and Garrett XL500. I never learned how to use a 1280X, but I have to believe with today's technology there are better choices for starting out in the wonderful hobby of Metal Detecting.

the 1280 was not made for salt water - very difficult
for fresh it was awesome - cz20 which is the cz21 now
was made for salt water and is awesome in all metal just look at my finds

There are many waterproof machines that are better than the 1280 these days depending on how deep you plan to go. Wading and shallow water the Legend, Equinox, and Deus 2 will work great. For deeper water the CZ21 and Excalibur are star performers too if you want discrimination. For PI machines, other than some older models, there isn't much on the market at the moment other than some expensive JW Fisher and Aquascan machines.

anyone using the fisher 1280x. for shallow water hunting ? are they any good ? thx d
I have been using the 1280x for many years. As I live in Iowa it is all fresh water detecting. This machine has found me a lot of $ worth of finds at beaches, both in the water and in the sand. It works VERY well for me. I also have a second one for backup.

I have the xl 500. And don’t like it. Thx d.
I started out in the water back in the mid 80's with a Garrett XL200. Worked fine for me, found a lot of gold and silver.
If you don't mind my asking, what don't you like about it?

52+years ago I was finding lots of silver and wheat cents on every outing using a BFO detector. That doesn't mean it was a good detector, just that I was hitting spots nobody else had hit yet. In today's world with the competition we have and excellent detectors to use, you need every advantage you can get.
