So last night I got in a quick hour long hunt before dark. I decided to try a different area near a area that I've pounded over the last few months and have been very successful at. I hit a slightly jumpy signal but it was reading very deep so I dug it. About 8 inches down i saw a gold shimmer in the hole and I feel like my heart stopped for a second. I broke off the rest of the clump and saw what looked to be an eagle. At first I thought coin but when I flipped it over I saw a broken shank. Despite being slightly disappointed it was not a coin I was still ecstatic to see that eagle. After doing some research last night I believe it to be a William Crumpton war of 1812 button? Hopefully someone can chime in. It is a right facing eagle perched on what look to be crossed cannons. There are horizontal lines that still have gold gilt in them. It was found in southern New Jersey near the Rancocas creek which connects to the Delaware river. Any thoughts? Also should I clean it up or leave it? I have heard aluminum jelly is good for buttons.

It sure looks like a one piece War of 1812 Ordnance button. If so, that would be a banner find in my book!

Don't clean it any more.

It may be worth some bucks.

Some others will chime in on how to proceed with conservation.

That is an excellent and rare find!

Old Rebellion War Relics

Very rare and early War of 1812 era, ordnance button. Flat 1 piece, made of gilt brass. Made around 1812-1821. This is the earliest pattern issued, with three known die variants. High Raised relief pattern with lined field background. Depicting an eagle facing left perched on a set of cross cannons. Three cannon balls underneath the barrels Encircling around the outer edge is a 1.5 mm raised border. These are considered very rare and are hard to come by.

The Ordnance Department was first established in 1812. They were in charge of development and procurement of weapons to the army. This all came about because the army had trouble supplying its troops with ordnance and weapons during the war
