Hi all -

This is my first post, so first I'd like to thank everyone for their contributions to the site. I'm a complete newbie at metal detecting, but browsing the forum since I got my detector about 3 weeks ago has been incredibly helpful. Today, armed with my MD and a pinpointer I ventured out into the backyard to get started. I live in the Northeast in a fairly old town, so I was not only looking to test out the new machine, but also hoping to find something at least moderately interesting on my first pass.

Well, I found something - but I have no idea what I've stumbled upon. The attached photo shows a part of the item - it's still mostly buried, and I assume it's fairly long since the detector was going off for about 2 feet around it. But it appears to be some sort of hard wire-like item that was wrapped in burlap or something. My first thought was old underground low-voltage electrical, as it was only about 5 inches down - but it's really rigid and it won't budge when I pull on it. Before I just rebury it or let my curiosity get the best of me, I thought I'd post it to see if anyone has come across anything like this.

Thanks!

Is it near the base of a tree by any chance? When a tree is moved the root ball is usually wrapped in burlap or something similar, and wire or rope used to hold it together.

I'm not in any way recommending this, but if it was me, and on my property, I'd hook a chain to it, attach the chain to my truck and start yarding it out. I did that on a galvanized water line on my place, and was surprised where all it went. I did know the pipe came from the creek and had been used to water the yard, and knew it wasn't hooked to the house before pulling it out. Welcome aboard T Net.

Good though Ken!

This past Spring I planted a tree that had burlap wrapped around the roots. Not knowing whether to leave the burlap on or off for this particular tree, I asked the nursery guy. He told me it would take 4 to 6 months for the burlap to decompose. If that is true, wouldn't the burlap you found be fairly new?

WELCOME to the forum! :) Breezie

I find that wire crap all the time in fields. I usually try to pull it out; sometimes I can, sometimes I can't. It's not usually anything significant.

Looks like it was the wire around the tree root, as everyone mentioned. Thanks to all for the help!
