The weekend started out with meeting up with a gentlemen I had met through Craigslist who is into Privy digging. We thought we had a pretty good prospect for Saturday, but if we went by the Sanborn map, the privy would've been sitting on a hill that had been resodded. So we probed the other side of the yard, and located what we though might be one of the privy walls, but couldn't locate the others. So we chose to dig an 18" square to see what was up. What we ended up finding was the foundation to a garage that previous owners had apparently burned down. Repaired our hole and called it a day (the land on the back by the alley had all been relandscaped, and resodded, so we weren't going to tear into that. Good learning experience.
I got a call on Sunday morning on the 1870 home and decided on a whim to go hunt it. Alas, the back had all been relandscaped. I did find the tootsie toy back there and the 65 quarter, but nothing else. Went to the side, and dug the 2 tokens. They were stuck together when I pulled them out. The lighter colored one has what appears to be China Oklahoma as the wording on the base. Then hit a questionable nickel signal and dug it. 4 inches down, found the 43 nickel - my oldest nickel to date. In rough shape, though. Also found my third dog tag. Thought I would find more. As I was finishing up (the yard was quite small), their neighbor came home and said I was welcome to come detect his (this is in the historic district of Council Bluffs, IA). He also mentioned that he had seen me around at other houses in the neighborhood. Well, I've never been there before, so I have to figure, someone is making their rounds, and that's why I had the slim pickings. The homeowner had just purchased his home, so good possibility for the low number of finds.
Was excited for the tootsietoy car, and to probe the yard for the privy.
This is my last hunt for about 2 months, as I leave for a 5 week Army Basic Training course on August 22 (need to spend time with the family on weekends before I go)
Good luck hunting all while I'm gone. (I might sneak one in before I leave, just to scratch the itch)
