My ACE 250 arrived on Friday. I took it to my backyard yesterday and identified four locations where there might be coins. Today, I went back outside and re-identified and pin-pointed all four locations, then dug them up.

Here are my results:

Location #1: IDed as 1c at 6" deep...found "folded" bottlecap at about 4" deep at the location indicated by PINPOINT.

Location #2: IDed as 5c at 6" deep...found a pull-tab at about 4" deep at the location indicated by PINPOINT.

Location #3: IDed as 1c at 6" deep...found an old wingnut at about 4" deep at the location indicated by PINPOINT.

Location #4: IDed as "space" between 1c & 10c at 6" deep...found an old "bracket" at about 4" deep at the location indicated by PINPOINT.

NO COINS FOUND!! The PINPOINT seemed to be ACCURATE.

Please give me your comments about these findings.

I am not familiar with the ACE detectors, but I would suggest digging everything and play with the discrimination a little until you learn what it is telling you.

you can expect to find some trash with any detector at any price. stay at it and the coins will come.all of us dig trash from time to time. its part of the hobby.

What was your sensitivity set at? When I first got mine I was digging a lot of trash until I turned the sensitivity way low and then about 95% of the signals identified were right on. Then I just keep turning it up during the hunt until it starts IDing things wrong.

Please note that you will lose depth when you lower your sensitivity.

Congrats on getting into the hobby. Bottle caps and pulltabs are a problem for many detectors, if you don't dig them, you might be passing up a ring or a thin bracelet. Deep silver coins can sound like and ID as junk. You might try and bury a few test targets, good and bad targets just to familiarize with. If you don't find/dig any trash, chances are you will not dig any coins either. HH, Mike

just keep with it, and learn what its telling you, at times you can not go by the "id" i go more by the tone then the "id". but even that can fool you at times. pull taps yes will show nickel,

With my Ace I had a similar beginning but I couldn't pin point very well. ?I found that most of your trash and aluminum will tend to bounce around ID wise. ?The old round beer and soda caps that are aluminum ring up solid. ?A coin for the most part will not jump around ID wise. ?Older pennies will ID as dime/Penny. ?The Ace does love them pull tabs though. ?When I go out now I just tell the wife I am taking Ole Tabbie for a walk. ?

After getting advice from the boards here I took and planted some coins, ?marked them with golf tees. ?Then you can see how your machine reacts to each type of coin. ?The tee lets you find them easily and also lets you know if you pinpointed dead on or not.

As everyone else has said welcome to the hobby. Now lets look at your four objects and how they identified by the target id
#1 collapseble bottle cap- Aluminum- typically reads like zinc penny, but so does indian head cents, silver charms, small silver rings, larger gold rings, various relics

#2 pulltab-aluminum several diffrent types some read like nickle and higher. the newer variety are just a hair above nickle on an adjustable discrimination- med gold rings, larger silver bracelts, silver chains can read like this also, miniballs other small relics that are brass, small silver charms, large gold charms also. Other trash like larger pieces of cut up aluminum can, zipper pulls, new buttons

#3 old wingnut- if old then probabaly brass, although heavily rusted items can sometimes read as pulltabs

#4 old type bracket- these are aluminum . brass or other non ferrous metal and by size will read in that range. other objects in this range are many

Now as far as depth readings they can be right on or they can be off depending on type of soil, moisture of soil, shape of object, etc.

I dont have the Ace 250 but I have had one in my hands and it feels like a nice solid unit.
The above is fairly generic info.
You have a nice machine, just keep practicing with it.
Keep us posted on your finds

Be sure to recheck your holes after you retrieve your target. There might be a coin under the pull tab, etc.

If we always found good finds why get excited and post. It is the thrill of the hunt. The good stuff may be the next dig. The more you use your 250 the better you will get. HH Stan

Today, I took the four pieces of "trash" that I dug yesterday and scanned them with the "yeller feller"...NONE of them was a solid coin ID. Next time I'll know that these kind of signals are NOT COINS.

When the weather gets a little warmer I am going to the city park and look in the sand around the swings and monkey bars...I expect to find some coins there and a the school play grounds.

Thanks for the response from all of you. It has been helpful and encouraging.

for the most part you are right in thinking they are not coins but..........dont forget that deep coins or coins sitting at a wierd angle can give iffy id signals as well. in other words, only use that target id as a tool. it is not always right. the more you use the ace you will begin to learn its quirks.........welcome to the forum by the way! ;)

Thanks for the post Bob.

I am pretty sure I have an ACE 250 waiting for me under the Christmas Tree.

Your post and the answers you got will help me get started.

I have permission to search an old barn, circa 1871, that is undergoing renovation next month. The floor of the barn was elevated about two feet. The floor has been removed exposing a dirt floor. (Probably more like dust and horse p**p.) I will write up any finds and how they read on the ACE.
