Well, wife bought me a new Garrett ACE 250, and me and my 2 teenager daughters:hello2: went out to try and see what we could find. We went 5 mins from the house, a grave yard from the early 1800s was about 50yards from where I decided we would break in the new detector as well as ourselves. The oldest bored out and ended up on the cell phone but me and the 13yr old continued. We ended up in a spot where every move seemed to hit big..we found a Hawk Brand button, half a fork from the Roger Bros, and well...what we were into was a dump from the 1800s. Blisters will show that a new guy at this needs more exp. behind the detector. We dug up every hit all excited only to find mason jar tops and some old wagon components...and a lot of mason jars pieces of glass....we will try to stay a little more conservative next time but the excitement was great. Good time regardless.:hello2:

The best place to try out a new detector is a playground or beach shoreline. Usually a few coins, easy digging and easy to clean up your holes. Once you find a few coins, you and your kids will get hooked.

I'm new to detecting as well; I'm at the point now that I can tell if it's iron, aluminum, or copper. I'm still pulling up more trash than treasure - on purpose. I figure I'm helping by digging up all those beer cans and putting them in the recycling bin. Thinking back to when I was a kid with no A/C, I concentrate on the base of the biggest trees on the block. Thats where we would sit to rest on hot days. I've pulled out coins on every outing, though nothing older than 1980 yet.

Dig all the signals to help you learn your machine. I strongly suggest a pin pointer if you don't already have one.
Also good batteries in your detector are a must. Happy hunting.
