Technically, it was my second time out but my first time was with a Tracker Pro IV from Costco and that was terrible. That detector would read small nail fragments as if they were Silver Dollars. Taking in the advice from this sub I decided to return the Tracker Pro and upgrade to a Simplex+. HUGE difference. Only regret so far is researching the Simplex so much. I now get a steady flow of herpes simplex relief ads.

I wouldnt go detecting without a pin pointer. Even a cheap one will save MASSIVE amounts of time.
Save your money and get a good entry model detector.
I've seen a lot of youtube videos where the detectorist rubs the finding with their thumb to see more detail. Do not do this. You will rub the details that you can just barely make out right off the object.
Buy a decent, light weight shovel shovel. The more efficient that you are, the more you will find. Invest in the right tools. $30 well spent.
Always run your pinpointer over the surface before you dig. More times than I would like to admit, I dug a nice plug only to realize that the signal was a clad Lincoln chillin' 1/8in under the surface. A shallow scrape with a trowel is all that is needed to pop these people out.
