To start, I am a new to this but fortunate to start with the XP Deus.
I unboxed the Deus on Friday and went out to a family farm in TN yesterday (Sunday) for a couple of hours.
I walked a small secluded pasture field surrounded on three sides by typical 2000 ft mountains (or hills if you are in the West). I was not "looking" for anything as much as I need to spend time with the machine to learn hands-on in addition to the hours of YouTube videos I have watched.
At first, I was very frustrated with all of the noise in my ear and no clear signature of a find. I noticed that the ground balance varied but averaged around 75. I adjusted to that level and that might have helped the "noise" some. I hit on a few iron pieces and could definitely hear the difference of a hit from the noise.
The first find was an old (looks almost hand made) nail about 7-8 inches deep. Even though it was iron, I was very encouraged that the Deus was able, in the hands of a true novice, to find a small nail in the middle of a pasture at 7-8 inches. After a few more pieces of iron (parts of an old mule-pulled plow, a few nuts and bolts), I changed the programs to hear the differences in audio.
Finally, I got a hit of 85-95 and got pretty excited. After an 8 inch dig, I found the base to a shotgun shell. Still, I enjoyed the thrill og the unknown that keeps us digging.
For anyone that "hunts" the Middle TN basin and it's fairly heavy clay soil, do you have any setting suggestions for the Deus. I know that I am way too early in the process to start monkeying with too many settings but would appreciate any advice for the soil here. I think I will be spending many many hours in this area as it has, I hope, great potential for 1800's former home places, known Indian camps, and I just learned of an overnight by an Ohio regiment during the Civil War including one death.
I had family to meet for a genealogy project but I absolutely enjoyed a couple of hours out learning, searching, and digging.
I appreciate learning from you folks.
