Well, tonight turned out to be a lot firsts for me. Got out tonight for about 2 hours for the first timein 2005, got first silver of the year, and it happened to be my very first silver three cent piece in almost 25 years of detecting. I am still amazed at how much I have been finding in my favorite spot. I've been hunting it now for 3 years, and just keep finding all sorts coins. I have found so far in this same spot, one large cent, about 50 indian heads, hundreds of wheats, two two cent pieces, many buffalo nickels, several barber and mercury dimes, and a barber half. The only thing I have not pulled out of my spot, is a half penny, nickel three cent piece or silver quarters. Anyways, hope you enjoy the photo.

Nice find, I found one also last year. Mine was a 1851. Man I didn't realize how thin and small they really are. I never saw one till I dug one up. I thought it was one of those play coins from the 50's. It was so caked with oxidation I didn't realize what I had till I got it home. Not many guys find these coins. They where used for postage back in the day. The one I found is floating around on the site somewhere.

Yea, tell me about it. ?I am a coin collector, and have couple in my collection, but they are put away for safe keeping, so its been a while since I handled them. ?When I found this one, I almost wasnt going to dig the signal as it came up as a screwcap/zinc penny. ?But I have found so many indian heads read that way too, so I dug the plug. ?The coin was so small that the detector had a tough time picking it up after I dug the plug, and had put the plug back and was walking away again. ?I just happened to swoop around the plug again, and got the signal again, in some loose dirt. ?There was a small clump and I put it in front of the loop, and sure enough, there it was. ?I kept breaking down the clump until I had what I thought was a pencil eraser covered in dirt (thats about the size of the three cent silver piece). ?I ran my finger against the clump and saw the three roman numerals. ?I about died. ?You can not imagine the self control that I had, not to just rub the rest of the dirt off, but I showed amazing restraint, especially since I stay out about an hour and a half after I found this. ?But I waited till I got home and ran it under the water. ?I am glad that I did wait, as the coin is in really nice condition, somewhere between very find and extra fine. ?But yes, they are small, and elusive. ?
