Hey guys, i took my cheap Winbest Master Edition detector out to my inlaws ranch out in the desert to look over some old homesteads. I was only able to get about an hour worth of detecting in. For my first time and how long i was out, i thought i did rather well.

Top: A chisel/wedge. Bottom: Copper/Brass rivet, a tarp ring, cork screw, copper button, 2 house keys, and a desk key. I also found a few .22 long and a .22 short round.

My detector was a gift, i know its cheap, and if anyone wants to send me a better one they are welcome to. I just don't want to hear about how crappy it is, i'm aware. :)

There are many great finds made with inexpensive metal detectors. As long as you are enjoying yourself, that's all that matters. Nice finds extremx. I like the old keys. :icon_thumleft:

Sounds like it works and by your finds that's proof it does it's job way to go keep swinging low and slow.

When you dig cool old stuff like that it must work just fine.. :icon_thumleft:

Maybe if i can find enough things to justify getting a better one i will get one later. There is a whole lot more to hunt where i was, and look forward to spending more than an hour looking around. Maybe i will gather up troseph_ut and go make a day of it.

well...if the property has been in the family...
find the outhouses...the keys suggests long term settlement{for the west}...so i'd get to looking for the privy...

bottles...coins ect...

When I started seriously hunting last year, I started with a $100.00 detector and an urge to find kewl stuff. By the end of 2012, I found enough to pay for my detector 10x over. Not that money is the key issue, but for someone on a budget, that takes to the hobby, it certainly helps if the hobby helps pay for the equipment. I upgraded my machine but haven't found half as much as last year. This year I'm more focused on finding things I haven't found.

I absolutely love your first finds. I would be happy with those result. Happy hunting and welcome to the site.

Those are great first finds! Whereabouts in Utah are you? I am in Delta and like to get out whenever possible.

Looks like you have the bug ,now when you go back there with your upgraded MD you will fid the things you missed .

That's the kind of stuff that turns my crank. I'd rather find one of your keys than $10 in clad coins. And welcome aboard T Net, looking forward to seeing more good stuff. Secretcanyon gave you good advice, dig and screen the outhouse. No telling what might have fallen in there. Coins, pistols, knives, bottles etc. ended up in them, and are worth the time digging.

Yes, that is on the to-do list. I ran out of time this last trip. Next time i will take my brother-in-law or father-in-law and they can point out all the old foundations and whatnot.

My in-laws own thousands of acres around Beryl, UT. We go out there and ride 4-wheelers and horses all the time. Been wanting to MD for a while.

I took to my front yard last night... found a matchbox car under the sod and a penny :)

good finds and dont worry about a cheap detector i use one and ive found lots of good stuff and yes you can even find old coins (i found an 1891 seated dime) HH
