First Successful Day

The title is a little off the cuff. I am using a Radio Shack 63-3013 and spent about 2 hours around my house. I think this might be a good location since it is an old horse farm and has been around for 250 years. I found a shopping bag full of old metal like washers, bolts, an old curtain rod, bits of other no descript pieces and 36 cents. Is it normal to find so much junk metal? Perhaps I am not using the discriminator correctly. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Wolfe

Wolfe, I am not familiar with the detector you are using, but I downloaded the manual from the Radio Shack site and took a quick look at it. First, good job on clearing away all the iron trash, now you will be able to do a slower, more methodical search for smaller item such as coins or rings. As for your detector, like I said, I am not familiar with it, but I do know that setting the ground balance is critical with a machine like that. To get the best performance from your detector, make absolutley sure that the ground balance is set properly, and hunt in VLF mode. From what I understand, that old TR type is obsolete technology. I would reccomend using as little discrimination as you can stand. It's worth digging up the trash and getting rid of it, as that will clear the way to better finds underneath all that junk. While your finding the trash, get a feel for what sounds the machine makes for differant items - try guessing what the target is before you dig it up, and take note of the results every time, until you start guessing correctly all the time! Keep at it, and read you manual about 50 times until you can recite it by heart. By the time you can do that, you'll already be making nice finds! Good luck, and happy hunting!!
