Yesterday my wife made a random comment to me about a local site that is connected to the Revolutionary War. She happened to find the location for me so I looked it up. Sure enough, houses built directly on the site. BUT, there is a plot of woods nearby that looked promising. I met up with my hunting buddy Ryan this morning and we traipsed out into the woods. The swinging was easy, just had to "dodge" some bullets as it is hunting season and the stands were all around. Very quiet, very few targets. Then, a solid but medium tone. 6 inches and under a cluster of roots - always a good sign for age. Pulled out the target and I knew it was something due to the thin silver disc sitting in my hand. Perfect size for a 1R. Sure enough, I saw Carolous III bust and I knew what I had. I could make out the date 1787! After all these years of watching others pluck spanish silver, I finally found mine. Also my first 18th century silver coin. As a bonus, I saw 2 eagles chasing one another and shrieking loudly just over my head. Ryan said he later saw 1 of the eagles with a fish in its talons.

Edit: It is actually a half real.

Great finds and story.

Thats an amazing find !!! I guess those Eagles brought you some good luck.

great find. sounds like she's a keeper, and the coin too

Nice find, congrats!I say always listen to wives.

Awesome finds and cool story!

Great find but to these eyes it appears as a 1/2R versus a 1R coin.
If I'm right, the diameter is 18mm versus 20mm for a 1R coin.
The main characteristic of the ID is the letter 'R' representing a 1/2 Real piece versus if I saw "1R" that would represent a 1R piece.
Either way, it's still .9027 fine silver; and the mint appears to be Mexico City.
The complete reverse is HISPAN.ET IND. R. (little 'o') over M. FM
Don.......

You are correct. Thank you kindly for the information.

Nice recovery on the silver, are you going to leave it as is, or clean it up?

Great find Ben, and congrats for breaking into the 1700s. That's always a special moment for any relic hunter. And bald eagle sightings are a good omen for me too. There have been a few times I've seen 1 or 2 on the way to a site, and those days always turn out great.

High 5 on your first Spanish silver. :occasion18: Nothing better than a nice deep signal under a root.
Congrats,
MM

This was a great day! Don't forget to include the other coin you found...even if it is basically a washer...

Edit: It wasn't just a great day, it was...P-E-R-F-E-C-T
