First time out in 2016 and what a great way to begin. Found my first Spanish silver - 1/2 reale. Found a nice old button too. Hope my luck continues like this for the rest of the year.
Thanks for looking and happy hunting! ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1452279943.790488.jpg

Nice finds. Hard to tell from the picture but it looks like the old dandy button has some gilt still on it. Put it in some lemon juice and clean lightly with a tooth brush. I did this one last night but it only had a just a little gilt remaining...

A Carolous 3rd 1/2 Reale. Beautiful! Doesn't Spanish silver feel wonderful in the hand?!

Congrats!

Steve

Thank you. I will give that a try

It works great and there is a lot better examples of people's on here cleaned in lemon juice than mine I showed you. If I ever get the time I got to get a my buttons out with gilt remaining and do the process. I have a bad habit of bringing the stuff home I find and putting it away with out cleaning it up very well. [emoji2]

nice finds, congrats on the S.S.good sign of things to come!

Hi; Nice Reale there. Now about that button. It appears to have a Constellatio Pattern on it. Thing is that it also appears to have a concentric line around it. Please look at the button between those lines and in the Center of the pattern and tell us if you see ANY kind of lettering. If there is writing there you may very well have a George Washington Button there worth far more than a dandy button. As is without lettering your button is worth about $10 ok. I await your reply.
Also where are you at in MA. I'm in Boston. Maybe we can hook up some time ok. PEACE:RONB

Hey Barker, trying like heck but cannot find any kind of lettering. I appreciate you letting me know because I am clueless about buttons. Wish it did after reading your message. I am on the cape. Interested in hunting your way too if interested. Thank you

Sweet! Spanish silver is the stuff all the pirates wanted, yar! :icon_pirat::treasurechest::skullflag:

Hi Harpooncc; I would enjoy going digging with you. Thing is that I don't drive due to a broken back. I lose control of my legs sometimes. I don't want an accident I caused on my conscience. BUUUUT if you want you could come here and Ill take you to some prime spots ok. I learned about buttons through a LOT of reading and personal experience as well as following others info as well. Now I'm pretty good at it. Did you try the Naval Jelly yet ?? Thing about it is that it eats rust and iron oxidation without effecting the surface metal when done right. Like I said, put it on the lettering with a Q-Tip swab and leave it on for ten minutes max. Then wipe it off with a paper towel and then toothpick the lettering. when done wipe it down again then apply the Verdi Cleaner ok. This will bring out a LOT of details you never even saw. You can repeat this process every 2 - 3 days without harming the button ok. Try it. It does work.
That's why the Military use it. It won't harm the original metal surface. Text back and let me know what you think. It may actually bring out any lettering on the Front as well ok. PEACE:RONB

I heard good things about naval jelly. I just never actually got some to try yet. I did just do another button with lemon juice and I find it works really good but I can tell you have to be careful. I stopped with this button just a few minutes ago and I think it's done. I just dipped for a minute and then used a soft toothbrush and then repeated a couple times. I wasn't completely sure if it had any gilt left but it did under the crust. I don't want to get greedy and ruin it so I stopped and rinsed with warm water.. I think it turned out well though.
