Got my first silver, a 1961 Roosevelt dime today, not much else but a few bullets, a few newer pennies. I have discovered that when you are using a pinpointer, it is much easier to tell if you have a coin prior to digging, just use the tip of the pinpointer, circle the area where the hit is occuring and see how high and wide the hit is. If it is circular and small, it is a coin most likely, if it is long or has a large hit area, it is junk.
