First serious hunt of "08" First large cent!
It all started 52 years ago on April 6th. I was born. Fast forward to Dec 31st 1981. My fourth daughter "Jessica" was born. Fast forward to April 6th 2008, for my birthday,Jessie landed me a whopper of a permission. A local college, started in 1852 gave permission to detect. The place is now used for weddings, weekend retreats and things like that. This Sunday there was nothing going on there,so I got the go ahead.
I called Dave aka: Stu Pedasso here on tnet, and he agreed to make the 2hr trek to join me. Thanks,Dave! We arrived on site at about 7:30 A.M. Now I don't know if this place has been detected before, but there is a woods in the back that I was sure has never been hit. So Dave and I walk into the woods about 100 feet from each other. My first hit was scratchy foil type reading. I kicked some leaves to the side, and there is a sterling cross and chain tangled up in the brush. After looking at it,it looks like someone purposely wrapped it on that stick. After a few junk digs I had a reading between 85 and 94,4.5 " deep,I dug out some of the dirt, swept over it again, now it was barely reading anything,I figured a piece of iron,I shoved the leshe in one more time and out pops a copper disc! Could it be!!?? YES,an 1850 large cent,my first!
Went over and showed Dave after the high fives and congrats we went back to detecting. After finding nothing else good in the woods,we tried some different spots. We found some clad and assorted junk.
After a food break we tried a large area in between a couple buildings. I thought for sure Dave was going to get skunked today, but he pulled one out of his a$$. He had a nice quarter hit, that he thought was clad. He was being kind of rough with it. He came walking over by me with a big smile on his face. He hands me an 1866 2 center! Sweet!
We detected for a while longer, and then decided to call it a day.
I ended up with the large cent, the cross and chain, and suspender clip. Dave got the 2 center, a 1917 wheat and a game token.
All in all, a good day with a good friend!
