Returned to a permission I found two civil war plates at last Friday. Here’s the round up from today’s hunt. Best find: 1876 seated liberty dime. Two Indian head pennies 1880 & 1863. 4 wheat pennies 1953, 1942, 1912,1929. What I thought was a token is a large cent with a hole in it - worn so smooth, I can’t get a date. Same with the Indian head nickel. The gold gilded button is really intricate. Does anyone know why so many coins are found with holes in them?

Very nice recovery congratulations

Congrats on a great bunch of finds !

It was common practice in the old days to "Hole" coins.
Coins were often put on a wire or string so they could hidden inside clothes to help prevent loss or theft.

That sure looks like a satisfying haul for the day. Love that dime.

Never heard this one before. Always thought they were holed to be worn as jewelry.

That seated is in great shape! All the ones I've found are worn nearly smooth. One day...

Congrats on your first Seated Dime. If the hole is in the center of the coin, it was likely used as a "washer", because they used what they could, and what they had. If it is found on the top of the coin like yours is, its for various reasons, like E-Trac-Ohio said, to secure them inside of clothing, and also, a lot of them holed the coin and wore it as their birthyear coin. My Mother in Law who is alive and well at age 100, told me she remembers her Parents, Grandparents, and other relatives doing this, or at least talking about it as a "Fashion Statement" back in the day. She said, back then, it was as common as a wedding ring is today.

Nice finds. I was under the assumption that the upper holes were for bracelets or necklaces.

Very nice group of relics and coins. Good hunting.

Nice job, that’s some fine ‘tectin!!

What a way to knock one off the bucket list- that Seated is SWEET- Congrats!

Congratulations on your first Seated Liberty Dime! :occasion14:

Thank for the great explanation Treazurehunter.

Coins were holed for various reasons. To be worn as jewelry, and to be carried, sometimes several on the same string or wire, to make the chance of losing them much smaller. If the coin was used in a bracelet it will have two holes opposite each other to construct the bracelet.
