This is my first post other than my intro. Anyway I'm on the prowl with my Radio Shack MD until I figure out which unit I need. I found this in Charles City County, VA today. The longer side of the object is clearly sharpened straight-edge. It is approximately 8 inches long. I'm guessing that it isn't worth much, but I've made a deal with myself that I wont drop $1000 on a new device until I can find some interesting items with my current unit. What do you think this is?

from the pictures I'd say knife blade also. What do you civil war guys think, could it be part of a saber?

I was guessing along the same lines. Any guess on age? We had Indians all over this area along with a lot of civil war activity.

How wide is it? Breezie

2 1/2 inches wide

Welcome to Tnet, looks like you are off and going. You will do fine just dig that's all you have to do. HH

I also think it has some lettering on it. As pictured here...there appears to be an "H" or and "M" carved into it and I think a couple of other characters following it. I am looking at the area between the 3 1/4 - 4 1/4 inch marks. Also, any advice on cleaning it up, or is that a mistake?

Not exactly know what you got there, But I do see the Letters, Find you an old Bowl that will let it lay flat, And pour enough Apple Cider Vinegar in until you cover it all, Give it about 3-5 Days and rinse off and maybe use a brass brush to brush off the remaining crud................Then
you should be able to tell what the letters say...............................HH

P.S.
A rounded bowl so that both sides will be emersed at the same time
like an old tupperware bowl.
But Be CAREFUL if your married wifes don't think too highly of us guys
Doing things like that in their bowls.............

Thanks for all of the advice. Nice to know that the forum is open to helping newbies. This has me excited about getting out there and finding some more relics.

Heres an update after two days in the apple cider vinegar. It appears to have "WATT" inscribed on it along with "M" and "N". Cant tell what is between the M and N yet. Anyone have any ideas as to what it is with this added info? Thanks again!

I have no idea at this point what it is, but could there be an ampersand between the letters as in M & N? Although I don't think your item came from this company, I thought I would mention it:
INVENTORY

I'm looking forward to seeing the cleaning process progress so we can determine what it is. Interesting find, Breezie

Here it is with a little added exposure in photoshop...

Cleaned up quite a bit although it took a lot of elbow grease and a wife who is very unhappy with the condition of our kitchen sink now:laughing7: The clean up effort did a little damage to it. I've got to find a better way. What was thought to be M - N is actually M +N. Any suggestions as to how I can figure out what this is?

Maybe it has to do with Newton-Metre(Meter)

Newton metre - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

There's an online calculator to convert watts to Newton meters/seconds.

Watts to Newton Meters/Second Conversion Calculator

Just a thought . . . Breezie
