First point I've seen like this.

Heavy rains and record flooding 0f late brought a good wash to my favorite sites. I've picked up a lot of nice things recently, and this find has me really intrigued

I often see pieces of shale laying around, but can't say I ever found a piece that showed any sign of modification, until the other day. I picked this piece up thinking it was coincidental, but with a close look, I was very surprised to see these notches were nicely ground into the piece.

The piece is right at an inch now, it's a little over 1/16th thick and I am guessing it may have lost about 3/8th inch. This is the only un-flaked point I have ever seen, and I am wondering if anyone else has found or seen anything similar. Looks like he made good use of the two tone material. It must have been an ornamental piece because it is nicely ground all the way around.

My best guess would be a Pendant that either has the hole broken off or it was suspended by the notches. I don't think it was an actual Point. It doesn't look like the sides are sharp.

My thoughts too Grim. Ever see an arrowhead shaped pendant?

That is a unique and awesome find! :notworthy: Cool!

I have. Here are two from Ma., made of slate. The triangle is 1 1/2" long, so these examples are small in size, as your piece is.

Nice find!

If there had been a hole in or at the missing part I would assume there would be part of the drilled hole at the break. A break would happen at a point of least resistance. jmo.

How about a tool for incising clay pots? just a wild guess, but I could see a little handle, and those smooth sides would make nice little hash marks around a rim.

Of course I have no idea, but it's fun trying to figure out what it was.

I'm always skeptical when I start hearing ornamental, or ceremonial......I'm sure they wore things at times, but I believe most of their time was spent trying to keep their bellies full.

Even the flat sides look to have wear on them. Nice find what ever this is. I can imagine it in a deer skin pouch with other small objects.

Already thought about it, and looked at that under my scope. There is no sign of a hole at the break. You are right though old digger, that would be the likely spot to have a break.

Here's another notched pendant with an arrowhead shape(and fern fossil).....

If not decorative, maybe a tool we haven't thought of, like Gold Maven suggested..
