I was cashing in rejects today (about 8 boxes worth) at the self serve coin machine, and as I was finishing up I heard a coin going round and round in the machine still. Once the machine stopped, I picked up the coin making all the racket...

a 1940 Half Crown from Great Britain. (about the size of a half dollar).

It's the first silver foreign coin I have found that was not from Canada, that I am aware of.

Here's the pics.

Cool find! How does that work for you, cashing in 8 boxes at once? I had a bunch of nickels to cash in today- I didn't take all of the ones I had but it ended up being $202.40, which was enough to fill the bag after they changed it only yesterday. I'm concerned that my CU is going to start getting angry with me...

Oops.... I miscalculated....make that 12 boxes of rejects
approx. $500 in dimes (2 boxes)
approx. $200 in nickels (2 boxes)
approx. $200 in pennies (8 boxes)

Most Wells Fargo branches in my area have self-serve coin machines, where I do all the heavy lifting and there are no bags that fill up only 1 giant bin in the machine that combines all the coins (I assume they are sorted later after pick up by the armored car service). The self-serve machines just give a receipt which I have to bring to the teller to get my cash back.

This time the bin filled up while I was cashing in so I got to watch them change it....it had around $5200 in it in misc coins.

I do a lot of volume, and have a lot of branches to cash in at, so I try to spread out my cash-ins so I don't see the same branch too frequently. Eventhough these machines typically have a sign attached that says no fees for members to cash in coins. I find that the self serve machines are faster and tend to be pretty accurate (at least so far). I also have accounts at other banks that I use occasionally for cashing in.

If you are concerned about too many cash-ins at your CU, you may want to consider opening an account at another bank or two with minimum balances and use them as a dump banks.
