Congrats gravy. Just found my first this week. Pretty exciting. HH

Hello Shallow Gravy. Congrats real nice find! I remember finding my first and only LC in March of this year, an 1828. Still lookin' for another. Welcome to T-Net and keep the faith! C9

Thanks! It was very exciting.

I found it in a corn field today. About 4" down. I think it's a matron, but I can't be sure. It's pretty trashed.
Looks to me like it could be the braided hair variety. 1839-1857. Hard to tell from the photo. I use a little Chapstick on my large cents to pop some more detail. Maybe you could get a date or partial date that way.

I tried to raise a date. No luck. I wish I could clean some of the corrosion off of it so I could know for sure. It's not worth anything to anyone but me, but I don't want to damage it.
I still think it looks like a Matron because of the distance between the hairline and the star. I may be wrong though:icon_thumright:

It is most certainly not a braided hair as a previous reply suggested. Certainly a matron head. Did you use water on the coin? If so, you'll certainly want to try the peroxide method with the next one you dig. Looks like water is not the way to go for the soil type in your area. On the bright side, it is a nice coin and congrats on your first!

Way to go on your first LC. I've only dug about 3 myself in 10 years. :dontknow:
Congrats,
