First hunt of 2025: early military button and silver quarter

Been forever since I've had anything worth posting, but this morning I went back to an early farm in my county and worked low and slow with my 6 " coil within 25 yards of the old house.

This place has been hit by multiple detectors over the years , and I've been here at least 5 times.

Up against a tree I got a decent signal in the low 20's and pulled this button. Later i got a mixed high tone and grabbed my first silver for the year.

Definitely going back again at some point.

If anyone has info on the button I'd appreciate it. The only backmark days "United States"

Congrats on the great finds !

Having a small coil is a huge plus.
Isolating good targets on junk metal sites, getting into tight spots, overgrown areas, etc.

I have seen these called "greatcoat buttons" before. They were made prior to the Civil War before 2 piece buttons saw usage. I think the 1830's would be a safe date range for your button. I am sure there are some Civil War diggers here that can give you more specific info

Wow 1830's is super early for my location, this is only the second flat button I've found in 7 years. They are very rare here.

What I meant is that the button was made sometime around the 1830's, it very likely could have been used later such as in the Civil War. Awesome find however/whenever it was lost! I have not seen a ton of them dug in my area

I can't date it for you but it looks early US Militia to me (1700-1800s) pre Civil War... Rev War era maybe ..

It's not quite as early as the Revolution. Buttons were manufactured a few different ways, but didn't have backmarks at that point. The design is later as well. Buttons like this one are typically seen 1820's -40's.

I think it's this button 1820s, RV stands for Relative Value, but don't go by that, the book was printed in 1976 I believe..
Its probably worth several hundred dollars I would think, but that's conjecture of course...
Like the old saying goes, It's worth what someone will give you for it, But regardless.... Its an impressive button !!

This is my oldest find I can give a date to. My area was settled in 1830's so something this old could have been brought in with the first settlers.
