First hunt of '08. Frozen ground and all.

I hadn't got to detect since Baldingboy and I went out last Saturday night detecting and I needed a fix BAD!

So I called Baldingboy Tuesday and suggested we go today. He started complaining because it was only supposed to be up to 32-36 today and that meant he couldn't wear his detecting TuTu. Wah! ;) :D Well I tried to call him all day but as usual he was ignoring me and wouldn't answer his phone. So I figured that meant he wasn't going to go detecting tonight. I was going anyway.
The wife didn't want me to go detecting tonight either because it was SO COLD. Oh wah wah wah. What's a little cold weather? It wasn't until after the hunt was done that I found out Baldingboy had paid my wife $10.00 to get me not to go detecting, didn't work BB.

I changed into some warm clothes, two shirts, a sweat shirt and a jacket along with some longjohns (not the doughnuts) and a heavy pair of pants and a stocking cap. I looked more like the Metal Detecting Bandit, I was a site to behold. So I started swinging and found a few pennies right off the bat. My phone rang and it was BB, "Where are you?" He asks me. I tell him I am detecting and I heard him say "darn" (or something like that) under his breath and he asks me "How cold is it?" 28 degrees with a 5-10 mph wind I tell him. Then he says to me and you are detecting? ::) ??? Man what is up with this guy??? I tell him yes and then he says reluctantly "I guess I'll show up and detect with you for a little while." By this time I had already been hunting for 40 minutes!

I got a weird little signal and dug the Fleur De Lis item. I found it with the backside up and saw the "cross" first, to bad too because I thought I had found my first Cross. Oh well... Well BB shows up about 15 minutes later and I about fell over laughing when he stepped out of the car. He was wearing a pair of 6 inch leopard heels, his camo overalls and a tiara and a pair of rhinestone covered headphones!( he told me it was a crown not a tiara). ::) :D
Then he tells me he forgot his gloves and I just happened to have a spare pair in the trunk of my car so I let him borrow them. We started hunting and I found a few more pennies a clad quarter and some junk.

My wife called and my brother-in-law had to go into the hospital for emergency surgery and she needed me to help her watch my sister's kids (at least that is what I told BB cause I was FREEZZING!!!!) So I packed up and came home.

Not much of a first hunt for '08. The ground was frozen which made digging just a little difficult. Supposed to be up to 60 this weekend! Maybe I can find a way to sneak out for a few hours Saturday or Sunday.

Thanks for reading this.... I'm sure BB will have a slightly different version of events. I always love to hear his version since it is always so creative and imaginative... ::) ::) ;D :D

Ok, Larry now I know you and Tom are totally insane. I am waiting for this weekend for the 50's and 60's.

LOL, know how you feel, last year my buddy and I went detecting with a climbing pick and I found a quarter and cut it in half trying to get it out of the frozen ground. Hey a guy has to do what a guy has to do. LOL

Re: First hunt of '08. Frozen ground and all.

Short update: My brother-in-law Wheels1973 made it through surgery ok and is expected to make a full recovery. I hope it is a fast recovery cause I want to go hunting with him again soon.

Glad your brother in law is doing ok and glad you got your fix. I know how that cabin fever gets to a person. What is nice about the cold is that you usually have the parks to yourself. ;D

I can't remember who's version is more fictitious - yours or BB's. :D

Re: First hunt of '08. Frozen ground and all.

Hey ME, great story as usual. Glad you got out. The warmer weather is heading here (Michigan) as well. High 30's & 40's for the weekend & rain; then 50's on Monday & Tuesday. I'm hoping the snow goes away because I'm going stir crazy not being able to detect. I certainly understand detecting in the cold & heading to the car freezing to death. That's the way my last two hunts were. My detectors are sitting here in my room without batteries. They sometimes cry during the long winter nights...I can hear them calling to me!

Re: First hunt of '08. Frozen ground and all.

Just found out that the Boy Scouts have used the area I was hunting last night for the last 77 years. So the Fleur De Lis is probably scout related?????

Awesome hunt as usual. You and BB take it too the max. Always enjoy your hunts. Glad your brother-in-law is well, give him my best!!!! Oh, and nice curtain weight........

Re: First hunt of '08. Frozen ground and all.

First of all, it's great that Wheels is doing better! :) Second of all...I can relate to your wife trying to keep you in the house when it's 30 below outside. You see, ME, she's just trying to save herself a whole lotta trouble here. Women know that when their man gets sick they are worse than having a kid with measles, chicken pox and the flu all rolled into one!! :D :D :D

Congrats on those finds!!!! Nana :-*

Re: First hunt of '08. Frozen ground and all.

Very cool finds! Are boy scout items collectible? I will be able to hit an area that has been used by those guys for a very long time.

Nana's right you know. Great story on the hunt. It is nice to hear the whole truth and nothing but the truth. HH
