I've been trying to get permission to hunt this old house's yard for 3 years. Today was the day, despite my manager's disgruntletude at my pulling a half-day of vac. to go treasure hunting.
Wow, long-seeming hunt (3 - 4 hours, I think) with so many nails and good targets. No pics of the junk or of the CAT key given to one of the owners. After getting about 15 early-20th-century roofing nails out of the way, I was digging about 80% good targets the last 2 hours.
Highlights: Found 3 coins glued together, formerly worn around someone's neck: 2 British and 1 India.
I thought a Sac Dollar was a Large Cent as I headed for the car & magnifier (old eyes). Wasn't.
Last item dug, right after a kid spill of 4 dimes and a nickel, was under a root and I decked it--twice. 1891 Grand Army of the Republic National Encampment medal struck by a company I'd never heard of.
There is still a *lot* to find at this place. The 'former tree place' I ended with needs a lot of looking next time.
Linda of the owner family works on the history of our local 1845 Oak Grove cemetery. I'll be searching my genealogy stuff on my surname and supplying info on Civil War Vets with that name who are buried there. She gave me the pamphlet having the info about Decatur Childs, who lived in this house post-CW and probably wore the G.A.R. medal.
The pamphlet also has short pieces about Dr. Henry K. Foote, Andrew Muir, the 22nd Michigan Infantry, and about Silas Bullard--who was among the 14 cavalrymen (4th Mich.) who captured Jefferson Davis.
I also found today that it is difficult (if you're me) to write on a paper towel.
