Yesterday was my 92nd hunt since taking up the hobby. I arrived at a park I had never hunted and observed 2 other MDers. One was walking very rapidly and swinging his coil at an angle to the ground. The other was too far away to observe technique. Decided to do my usual careful slow grid. Found $.85 in clad, a Velociraptor Hot Wheels car and my first ever gold in the form of a ring! I know some MDers return found rings. How does one go about determining who a ring belongs to?

Congrats 👏 on your first gold ring.
Unless it was a recent drop, or has an engraving on the band it would be a difficult return.
(Also there are folks that advertise to help finding lost items. They charge for this service. Then they post up the return wanting that special pat on the back mention)

Very nice first gold. I'd say that's a finders keepers ring. Don't say "Hey I found a diamond ring in this park, is it yours?" Everyone and their deciest relatives will claim it.

I have returned 4 rings but they were class rings and had initials on them so we were able to contact the schools and locate them. Almost impossible for other rings even with their initials or even a name. I would call that a keeper ring too. And like finding a hundred dollar bill, everyone that hears that you found one will try to claim it. congrats on the awesome gold

Awesome!!! Congrats!!!

Unless there is an inscription or other unique feature not shown in your photo, trying to find the owner will be an exercise in frustration at this point. If you hadn't posted a photo of the ring, I would have put an ad on Craig's list, Facebook, or Next door stating that I found a ring in that park, and to contact me with a detailed description with ring size to claim it. No photo. Even then, it's unlikely you would get a legitimate response, but, at least you have the satisfaction that you tried.

Very good advice. I learned that lesson many years ago with a found wallet. It was humorous to answer calls from people who would say "was it blue" and upon a negative response "was it red".

Nice ring. How do you know its your 92nd hunt? Do you keep a journal of your outings? Probably a good idea....
Indeed, I do. Cheapest pocket size spiral notebook. Record date, hunt number, locale, and list items found. Also take photo of the lot and save the photo with the hunt number as the name of the photo.
