First gold coin, not how I expected it.

Paid up again for this. $70 bought it all plus an extra pocket watch chain (not pictured). The coin is real around $62 melt value. The whole set together IMO is very cool, the pocket watch is from 1905 and the coin was probably on the chain for 100+ years. I'm surprised it's in the condition it is. I expected much worse. Now I have to figure out if I want to keep the piece as is or pop the coin off into a case or even turn the coin into a wearable necklace for myself. Thoughts??

If they have been mated for 100+ years, they are meant to be kept together IMO. You might release some funky voodoo curse if you separate them, I personally wouldn't. All or nothing.

I was planning at the very least putting it in a bezel holder so it's more safe lol but I would have to crack the loop hole at the top off and risk damaging it more..... Dang

Very nice. Keep it together IMO.. I wouldn't wear or use any piece of this personally.. maybe fit the coin (bezel and all) into a coin flip for safe keeping.

It just seems that it should be kept together as is. Somehow tells more of a story then if separated.

The coin is ruined. Whoever soldered it on was a novice. The wrong alloy solder was used and the coin got too hot. You can see the metal flowing deep into the coins surface on both sides. Even if it were a key date collectors would run from it. The watch movement is also toast. There is enough rust in there to stock a kids chemistry set. IMHO (if you are asking) Is you got a fair deal because of the gold weight. Keep it together and enjoy it as it is. The only way to get the watch working is to swap the movement with another running one. Not hard to accomplish. Cheers and enjoy!

The movement believe it or not isn't actually that bad. Only two screws are rusted, just ask Jimdon! He's cleaned up much much worse than this. And yea, the coin is ruined I know but still a cool piece. Still debating to leave it on the solder or to break it off and put it in a bezel and reattach that. It would protect it a little more but then I'd be paying another $60+ for a bezel so mehh might not.

If I were to wear the coin as is around a chain, I don't think it would break off the solder? After all it was done 100 years ago! If you wanted to wear it on a chain would you just take it as is or get a bezel?

Edit: I also have a donor movement to put in the watch that was serviced a few years ago. It's higher quality plus it's an exact fit, paid $30 for it about a year ago! Looks like it will come in handy after all.

Wow! Great buy. I concur with the others leave the coin as it is. Once you try to remove it you're going to probably ruin it and it won't look good in a bezel anyway. I'm not sure if the movement is too far gone but it would be fun to try to get it running again.

That's what I was thinking. I'm going to swap movements myself and the Diadem mov't shall be my first victim I suppose, hope I don't butcher it but it's worth a shot.

Edit: may not be my first mov't to service but I'll definitely give it a shot later on. Jim, do you do any prewashing before taking apart a movement?
