DAY 1
Back to the new school permission for my first hunt of 2024. I gridded a new section beside the school and spent a little time walking around the main playing field that has been detected by the folks without permission for a long time.
I spent 5 hours with the CZ21 and found 37 coins with a face value of $1.71, most of an ID bracelet, a 1955 wheatie, 2 modern buttons, a Catholic miraculous medal, an H Pepsi game tab, a sinker, a key, a roll of lead, part of a spoon or fork handle, tabs, foil and slaw oh my. An ok hunt, but nothing special.
DAY 2
I went back to the small town park. It was a chilly day, but the sun made for good hunting. I took the civil war bullets I found in the man’s yard who lives across from the park and gave it to him. He didn’t ask for it, but I thought as a Vietnam veteran he might appreciate the history. I have plenty of bullets and a little thoughtfulness can go a long way sometimes.
I spent 5 hours swingin the CZ21 and found 51 coins with a face value of $4.57, a large brass wire connector, a 3 token spill, a Catholic medal on a stainless steel chain, a Pepsi game can lid and tab, a coal mine chit, an older style door bolt hole receiver and the usual assortment of tabs, slaw, foil with some large iron bits.
The tokens were close to the surface. The 2 NO CASH VALUE tokens with the Eagle and shield were pressed together so they still have some shine on one side each. The third token is a 2008 Chuckie Cheese token. When the medal on the chain came out I thought YES SILVER, but then I got a closer look and it was DARN STAINLESS.
The game tab lid is for the Pepsi Matching Money Game. If you matched the left and right halves of the same dollar amount you were a winner. The tab is for the Pepsi Monopoly Game. If you got all the pieces for you monopoly you won. I can’t find a lot about the games on line. I remember them, but I’m not sure what year they took place. The cans were steel with an aluminum lid for the tab. This was before the all aluminum cans came out. Not great finds, but I think it is interesting and that makes it fun.
DAY 3
I went back to the dry swimming areas in the one park hoping the sand was thawed so I could dig. It has been below freezing over night some night, but in the 40s then during the day with some sun so I thought I would give it a shot before the snow falls this weekend. It was in the mid 30s and there were 40 mph wind gusts that kept blowing my plastic sifter and my mittens away when I put them down, but I shivered on and kept swingin.
I spent 4.5 hours with the ATPro and managed to clean up a decent amount of small stuff. I normally detect in the water with the pro set 2 or 3 notches below top on the sensitivity and iron on. For these clean up trips I have upped the sensitivity to one notch below top and I still have the iron on. I dig some iron when I get a mixed signal, but some of the deeper bits of small jewelry will produce a mixed signal until you get them closer to the top and then the signal gets better. (Info you might want if you choose to clean up the little bits like the crazy person I am.)
I found 11 coins with a face value of $0.81, a batch of small jewelry including a bracelet and 2 rings, part of some COACH sunglasses, sinkers, a shoe grommet, 3 tabs, a nice piece of copper wire to recycle and of course foil, and the occasional hair pin (strong iron signal cleaned up to make it easier to hear the small stuff).
One of the earring backs is marked STERLING and I can tell by the look that it is silver. (Silver that has been in the water for a long time has an easily identifiable look). I found 4 pieces of jewelry that look like gold. The earring is marked 10k and the stone is a nice little diamond (tested with a gem tester). The 2 earring backs and the SCORPIO bracelet acid tested at 14k, but they don’t look right to me. So I pulled out my KEE gold tester to verify the test and the pen had dried up so I have to order a new one which won’t be here til the middle of next week. So only 1 gold and 1 silver for sure for this hunt.
I wanted to go to the scout camp, but they are under 4 inches of snow and they are calling for another foot of snow this weekend. Looking ahead in the forecast I might be several weeks before I can get back there.
So this was my first gold and silver for 2024, but my year ends April 30. I have found 36 golds and 104 silver so far for my year that started May 1 and I have almost 4 months left to hunt. The clad is a little low for this year, but the gold and silver are right about on track for a good year. NOTE: some of the gold and silver is pretty small, earring backs and such, but but each one counts.
Thanks a lot for looking, have a GREAT NEW YEAR, stay safe, good luck and may your coil lead you to good things.
