First Finds

I just found this forum - posted the same message earlier in the larger today's finds board.? But here are a couple pics from my first efforts at a ghost town on some family property.? The wheel band and some of the trash metal was in an old grown over road bed.? The rest of the items were found at two of the house sites.

My question - when hunting a ghost town site such as a house place or road bed, how often should I expect to find a coin?? I had fun enough with the relics and trash!? Best find was the knife.? Also managed to find a good case of poison ivy though? ;)

That's a hard question to answer. You may find none, you may find a tremendous number, or anything in between. It all depends on the people action and the wealth those people pocessed.

Generally speaking, most short-lived ghost towns produce few coins. However, those few coins may be the best you'll ever find! Old large cents, bust heads and seated coins--you never know.

When hunting ghost towns never forget about the privy locations (outhouses). Find these and you can find a wealth in old rare bottles. Some of these also contain coins and jewelry.

Have fun at your ghost town sites and study their history. Old pictures can tell you a lot.

I agree, and couldn't have said it any better.

I've hunted several sites such as these, and some have given up no coins, and others have given up some of the best I've ever found!

Also,

the bottles you find on sites such as these "in general" will be more valuable than any coin/s you may find.

Good luck,

Bottles are used thrown away and broken so there like rare coins the less there are the more there worth some are just from certain areas and older hand blown bottles are hard to come by.
Well at least thats what I've been told.
Pick up everything when hunting and check it out later.
