First Finds - First Time Out

I am new to detecting, but this past weekend I did manage to find a few fun things. I hunt a ghost town on family property - in this case, one of the house sites and an old road that is overgrown. How often should you expect to find a coin? I mean, in this case, the coins I would expect would be 1840 to 1900 or so. So, is finding that age coin in a ghost town site an expectation or an exception? I had fun enough with the trash and relics!

The items are a metal band that seems like it went around a wagon wheel, a pony horse shoe, an iron, a hoe point, a file, and a few other odds and ends. I think the best find was an old pocket knife. I use a DFX and I used the relic program, but even on Coin and Jewelry, I still found some iron.

Hey!

Welcome! :D

Love that horse shoe!

Welcome aboard Rolo! I like the knife too, and that's a nice pile of relics! I would expect to finds some older coins in an area such as you descibed, but you'll probably do better after you clear a lot of that iron out of there. Iron relics are usually larger than coins, and tend to mask out smaller items. Spend some time clearing the relics and junk, and then go back in and clean up on the older coins! You've got a great detector, so just be patient and the coins will come! Keep posting and let us know how it works out! HH!

You should find a coin or two take your time clear some trash they will turn up.

HH!

Very nice Rolo. You should have a great time if the whole ghost town is on your property. What year was it abandoned or founded . Sounds like a great spot. HH

Amazingly, I don't know a ton of history. My family purchased the land 35 or so years ago. The oldest grave is dated 1869 and the newest 1917. Most of the remaining houses were bulldozed over in the 50's. There was a post office, two blacksmith shops, a grist mill, and I think as many as 200 may have lived in there based from what I have seen on census records. Always finding pottery and stuff. Mostly stone foundations remain and old rock walls. Google searches don't pull up much and I have not (yet) taken time to do higher level searches. I would ask the locals, but we have always had a terrible time with tresspassers. The falls has a big swimming hole - best natural swimming for miles around - so we try to keep it a secret as the old die off... It was the county "parking" location for a long time. The last house that was taken down was where some people gambled. At that foundation pile, in my early teens (20 years ago - ouch!), my mom found a few coins but generally we have only found iron relics and pottery. Somewhere I have a copy of the post office application/registration - but I can't get my hands on it right now. Stuck a picture of the grist mill foundation - that is still 15 feet above the water level.

You want to be careful about trying to reject iron in ghost towns. I deteccted a house they told me had burned down in Oklahoma. I found 6 of those old antique irons.Thats just my opinon though.

It's there just be patient and give it some time. When hunting over alot of land it may take awile to find a good nook. Bulldozers may have moved around the soil to much and buried up alot while doing so. Sounds to me the soil has been turned over. Your coins are now a foot deep and your deep iron is now 6 inches deep instead of a foot. Try and concentrate on a natural piece of land. One not touched by the dozer's. Listen for the tone i.d on the dfx to give you that good chirp in the background.

Good luck, It takes alot of time to master the dfx.
