From a colonial site here in the Shenandoah Valley. I'm thinking maybe a British Hat Badge, but not sure. Any thoughts? Unfortunately, I lost it right after I dug it. I think I can find it when I go back.

Yea, you can find it. Just take a metal detector back to the site. Just joking. Nice find.

Yes I agree with the hat badge. Nice find. Congrats!

Ok, I know this! It is a Revolutionary War period cartridge box badge. Used to hold the flap down on the box. The War of 1812 pieces were made of stamped brass and yours is cast! They are VERY VERY RARE. The Shenandoah Valley had one or more POW camps in it during the Revolution. J - E - A- L - O - U- S.

Wonderful find! Now quick, at sunrise go back and find it.

Very nice! Congratulations on a super neat first find.

Very cool. Let us know if you find it!

It is not a cap badge as you say its more solidly made. However, if it is a box cartridge piece its not 1812 because the Crown is VICTORIAN.

PS. My mistake its Rev War!!!:occasion14:

Yep, it's Rev War. I have practically the same piece and it's the ONLY Rev War item I've ever found. Want to someday get it restored too. Smoky's info is 100% correct and it is off a cartridge box as well.

Thank you all very much. I've dug a number of relics from that time period, but this is the first I've recovered that can be directly associated with the War for Independence. I'm truly sick that I lost it. I was sure I'd put it in my pocket. I have video of the recovery. The area I think I dropped it is only about 30'x40', so it shouldn't be too difficult to find. My truck was right next to the area. I'll be back there Monday, Lord willin' and film round 2 - hopefully! Maybe I'll find the rest of it too!

Great piece of history, congratulations! :occasion14:

Cool find!

Nicely done, and all the best,

Lanny

Very nice find. Just think, if you get back out there and find it again, you can re-post it and tell us you found a second one ! Good luck.

Youre a mind reader. Actually I'm hoping I find this piece as well as the rest of it.

Really a great piece of history, best of luck on the return recovery and possible more parts of the piece.
