It was a beautiful day here in N.J. so I took my first walk in the woods, intending to go as far as the marsh which I'd been working hard last fall. It turned out to be a short and happy half hour hunt which began and ended with this little button. It's another war of 1812 artillery button, similar to several I found in the fall, but with some differences. Most of the 1812 artiullery period buttons I've dug in this area have had slight differences despite beig of the same age, which pretty much confirm the presense of the artillery on this spot during the war rather than these being lost by locals. The presense of the military is consistrent with local lore, and it makes sense it would be mostly artillery, as land based artillery would be the best weapon to use against the harrassment from the British military vessels which cruised the bay. It seems to be an unlisted sub variety of Albert AY 51 or 52, but the back mark matches neither, and this may be an unlisted variety. Thanks for looking.
p.s. yikes, sorry about the huge pictures! I just got a new computer and am relearning the photoshop. sorry!
