Got the chance to detect my neighbor's yard as he is re-sodding his lawn out back and he let me do his front lawn (100 year old house) Found only 2 mid tones worth checking in his back yard where he has removed all the sod. Both times they were Indian Heads....wow! 2 within 5 minutes. Started to check his front lawn, was not finding much but got a nice soft smooth signal, it got my attention because it was so nice. I dug it and at first I thought it was a Rosie dime then I looked at the date, 1908 yep my very first Barber dime, now that really made me happy!!

To get back to the IH's, I did not check them as they were really dirty and heavy with green patina and a little worn. I got home and gave them a gentle wash and checked the dates. One was 1898 (my oldest to date, then I checked the other and nearly fell off my chair..1870 something!!! I can definitely see the 187 but the last digit is hard to read.

This is where I need help, how can I clean up the coin enough to read the date with out doing any more harm to the coin? It may be only an IH but a 1877 is worth about $500 in good condition, I think it may be a 3 but could still be a 7 hard to tell....anyone?

Pics as best I could get with my crappy camera and home made macro lens.

I think it may be a 74. Great finds. Great looking barber. I love seeing people find firsts. A great feeling every time

It may be a 6.rub the side of your nose or forehead and rub that area of the coin. It may highlight that number enough to see it

Hard to tell, I can see why you think it might be a 3, but something about that doesn't look right. No better ideas here though. That is a great looking Barber for your first one. Nice hunt.

So then...does that make you a coin licker and a nose rubber??:laughing7:

lol I know this technique, it actually works lol!

Great finds on the Indians and Barber by the way!

Its a 6..
Great finds..

Toothpick and virgin olive oil is what i use to clean copper. Nice finds. Oh its a real slow soak in the olive. Like months. Congrats

Actually I do tend to lick my coins a little to find dates when hunting lol

Very nice barber and you just gotta love those IHs

Thank you all, I went back to the Neighbor's yard to finish it off but all I got was clad, bling ring and 2 more IH's to complete the tribe, these 2 were in better nick then the others.

Hey Jedi I know it sounds ridiculous but if you do what I said it will highlight the details on the coin. I should pull one out and show a before and after

Ahab... That's just crazy... I am going to try it... Thanks

Very nice find! The IHCs are sweet... and a Barber to go with them. Well done. GL&HH.
