Detector(s) used
Garrett Ace 250
After ?lurking? around for several months and making a few occasional comments, I finally bit the bullet last weekend and bought my first detector, an Ace 250. It was pouring down rain the day I bought it, and I?ve been really busy ever since then, so the first chance I got to try it out was Thursday. I was tinkering around with the controls and increased the sensitivity to the max. Not yet feeling confident about my ability to cut a ?plug? in the grass, I started out in a part of my back yard where the grass won?t grow, and just used a common garden trowel. The first signal was right between the penny and dime indicators and said it was 6 inches deep. After trying the pinpointer and feeling that I had it right, I dug down to 8 inches and found nothing. Then I checked the pile of dirt I had removed and found nothing. Then I refilled the hole and checked it and found nothing again. Oh well, I figured, maybe the roll of uncirculated 1804 silver dollars still in the original wrapper from the mint was located on the other side of the yard. So I moseyed over there and got started. The next signal was strange, jumping from penny to dime and back repeatedly, and also jumping back and forth from 4 to 6 inches. When I used the pinpointer, it seemed to be saying that the target was a few inches across. I started digging very carefully, because it was in an area where I thought a part of the sprinkler system was buried, and I didn?t want to create a twin crisis, plumbing and marital. At three inches the familiar (to me at least) contours of a beer can started to come into view. You all know what a crushed Bud Light can looks like, so I?ll spare you the photo. I halfway expected my first find to be a pulltab ? imagine my excitement when it turned out to be the whole can!

Congrats Waco Kid, we all diggem', we still diggem, just be careful not to cut yourself on the darn things. I'm very glad you gave in and bought your first dectector, its such an enjoyable hobby, and it certainly has the potential to pay for itself, unlike many other hobbies. Once you find that one coin, relic, or ring, you're gonna be hooked for life. Happy Hunting and be sure to share some pictures of your finds.

LOL!! Thats funny, excited to find the WHOLE can.Keep on workin with that machine. Its gets easier.Im sure we will be reading/seeing some of your finds soon.Good luck and HH.

Don't worry they won't all be beer cans.I've rid my yard of 3 decades of beer cans over the last couple years. Most were left by original homebuilders as they are all 8-12 inches down seems like.I've found Busch Bavarian,Colt 45,Bud and Bud Light so far.My Aunt buried a time capsule in her yard some 20 or so years ago.She tried digging it up but she can't find it.Guess what I gotta do the next time I visit her in Georgia?Good luck and keep us posted when you hit your first good find!May your next find not be the pull tab that goes with the can!Take care. Way to go....That really is a nice find.....the detector was right in a way , it was reading between Penny and Dime....So depending on where you live , that can is worth at least 5 to 10 cents if you ( RECYCLE ) it!!!!! lol :) :) :) Its a learning experiance ....Good luck in the future!! and believe me ...The coins will start poping out...... 8)

Dont feel too bad....I had to dig 18 inches for my first beer can....You only dug 3 :D.........keep digging , you will hit the silver soon!

Thanks for all the replies! The weather should be pretty decent this weekend, so I'll get after it again. As soon as I find something worth photographing, you'll see it!

It can only get better from here.
Maybe your next can will be a Michelob Ultra (intact).
I know I have dug my share of cans. They sound good when they are a foot deep.

I'm glad you bit the bullet and got the detector, Waco Kid. Soon you'll be so hooked, we'll be calling you Wacko Kid. ;D ;D

I don't know why, but those cans sure sink fast and their signal sounds sooooo good. ;)

One thing to remember is yards do have a lot of trash in them, so your starting out about normal...
Keep at it,, and the goodies will come.. The fact that the pin=pointer was giving such a broad signals is a good sign, Try to remember that before you dig the next one...
