After ?lurking? around for several months and making a few occasional comments, I finally bit the bullet last weekend and bought my first detector, an Ace 250. It was pouring down rain the day I bought it, and I?ve been really busy ever since then, so the first chance I got to try it out was Thursday. I was tinkering around with the controls and increased the sensitivity to the max. Not yet feeling confident about my ability to cut a ?plug? in the grass, I started out in a part of my back yard where the grass won?t grow, and just used a common garden trowel. The first signal was right between the penny and dime indicators and said it was 6 inches deep. After trying the pinpointer and feeling that I had it right, I dug down to 8 inches and found nothing. Then I checked the pile of dirt I had removed and found nothing. Then I refilled the hole and checked it and found nothing again. Oh well, I figured, maybe the roll of uncirculated 1804 silver dollars still in the original wrapper from the mint was located on the other side of the yard. So I moseyed over there and got started. The next signal was strange, jumping from penny to dime and back repeatedly, and also jumping back and forth from 4 to 6 inches. When I used the pinpointer, it seemed to be saying that the target was a few inches across. I started digging very carefully, because it was in an area where I thought a part of the sprinkler system was buried, and I didn?t want to create a twin crisis, plumbing and marital. At three inches the familiar (to me at least) contours of a beer can started to come into view. You all know what a crushed Bud Light can looks like, so I?ll spare you the photo. I halfway expected my first find to be a pulltab ? imagine my excitement when it turned out to be the whole can!
