Finally got a chance to hunt a farm with my dad (our first farm hunt). The tobacco was not picked which made the hunt difficult. We did find a lot of flint, broken points, a Halifax point??, an intact spear/drill, a broken banner stone, and a segment of a stone bowl/geofact?? I will be posting two more pictures due to the fact I do not know how to reduce the file size. Your thoughts will be greatly appreciated. Thanks....Brep

Looks like your looking in the right place Brep, I bet you had a great time with your Dad! 8) One that you will always remember!

Still not bad for a first hunt on that farm. I see Rhyolite, are you in VA?
Point could be a Rowan, Halifax have shallower notches & longer slender tip.
Thanks for sharin'

Molly.

Molly,

The farm we hunted is near Roxboro, N.C.. Could this be a possible campsite because of all the flint chips? What do you think the broken rectangular piece could be? What about the broken black base, what type of point could it be? We couldn't really hunt well because the tobacco wasn't primed yet. Your thoughts will be greatly appreciated. Thanks............Brep

All those chips, looks like a camp to me! :icon_sunny:

Brep, If I'd have known you were on my doorstep I would have come out to meet you..
If you can take closer pics of the ones you are referring too, I'll tell you.
I can tell you for sure you are hunting on an Archaic campsite. These finds are what I come across everyday.
Next time you're there let me know, if its not too far, I'll meet up with you, help you search, of course no matter what I find would be yours..
Looking at your pic, now I can't say for sure without seeing closer pics but, the black point might be a Kirk, which would be Early Archaic, the larger point with the point & base missing as the look of a Morrow mountain type, which is Late Archaic, so that tells you the campsite could have been occupied by Early-Late Archaic cultures but, I would need to see them closer. Also finding 1 point type doesn't necassarily mean its a Early or late site, could have just been dropped by a hunter, you know on their way through, so to establish this, you need to find more than one of each type.
But I can tell you without a doubt you have a camp site..Congrats.

Molly..

Here's a better photo of the spear/drill. Please give me your thoughts on what type it could be.
Thanks.............Brep
